Staged BBC Series
Originally aired June 2020
Season One & Two available now. Where: Hulu Rating: TV-14
I stumbled upon this charming series after Georgia Tennant tweeted about Season Two had premiered on Hulu. I tuned in to see if it should be added to the queue to watch later and ended up watching the entire first season in one day. Michael Sheen and David Tennant's charm and chemistry are effervescent, but a sweet surprise was their real-life partners' brilliant scene-stealing.
Originally aired in June of 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Michael Sheen and David Tennant, playing fictional versions of themselves, to rehearse Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author while under quarantine in this six-part comedy written and directed by Simon Evans. Simon Evans attempts to use the lockdown's downtime to wrangle the two actors to rehearse the play and be first at the end of the pandemic to be ready to hit the West End. The remote rehearsing does include the obligatory zoom glitch; however, it is filled with a fresh, artfully directed emotional roller coaster of heightened versions of the two furloughed actors. The wives encourage the two to do "remote" rehearsing to give something to do during the down time. Georgia Tennant is pitch-perfect in every scene, using humor to point out they need a division of duties; homeschooling five kids and chores is the key to surviving the lockdown.
The cut scene shows footage of the British countryside, empty tourist spots, and the NHS workers- appreciation by the Brits during the pandemic. Staged is a brilliant take on the year that was trying and isolating. Michael Sheen and David Tennant are marvelous. I challenge you not to binge.
